The Feast of St. Marie-Nicolas-Antoine Daveluy
This French priest intended to do mission work in Japan, but hearing of the need for missionaries in Korea, he traveled there instead. He became fluent in the Korean language and used this to write many books on Catholicism, including a history of its faith in Korea, materials for new converts, biographies of the martyrs and confessors of Korea. Just three days after becoming the Apostolic Vicar of Korea, he, like his predecessor, was arrested and beaten for his faith. He was offered freedom if he denounced Christianity, but instead he explained it to his judges. He was martyred on Good Friday, 1866, and canonized in 1984 by Pope John Paul II.
